Lookbook n.5: Michigan, From the Caribbean blue waters of Lake Michigan, to Mackinac Island in Lake Huron, and on up to the Upper Peninsula and the shores of the deep and mysterious Lake Superior. Farmland and cornfields, old wooden barns and apple orchards, pebble beaches and sandy dunes, groves of birch trees and small lakes hidden by morning mist all create a beautiful backdrop for our next series on makers and their community. By Hand chats with yarn dyers Plucky Knitter and Why Knot Fibers, and knitwear designers Andrea Mowry and Jill Zielinski; tours LYS Wool & Honey; taste tests at Fresh Coast Chocolate Co; and marvels at the handcrafted beauty of Leelanau Trading Co’s leather and woodworking. We travel from the metropolis of Grand Rapids, where the internationally acclaimed ArtPrize is underway, to the small towns, historic fishing villages, and lighthouses of Leelanau Peninsula, then up across the waters of Lake Huron for an excursion to Mackinac Island. Along the way, we meet quilters and embroidery artists who use the natural setting of water, field, and forest as their inspiration, and create landscapes in thread and fabric.

Lookbook n.7: British Colombia's South Coast features projects and patterns that feature our makers’ materials and sources of inspiration, including two colorwork sweaters, a gorgeously textured shawl, and the perfect hat for cool fall evenings, all knit in Hinterland, Sweet Fiber, and Sweet Georgia yarns. Salt Spring Island’s Saturday Market inspired us to create an apple and cinnamon tart with a whimsical braided edge, and we have also designed a leather-bound knitter’s portfolio, perfect for taking all of your knitting needles and notions on the go. Finally, create your own one-of-a-kind pincushion, featuring wooly stuffing, a felted wool covering, and a handcrafted turned wooden base. Patterns in Lookbook No. 7 feature talented British Columbia designers Jenny Faifel, Lindsay Inouye, and Natalie Volyanyuk, as well as guest designer Andrea Mowry and several projects from By Hand Serial creative director Andrea Hungerford.

Lookbook n.8: Colorado's Front Range includes projects and patterns featuring our makers’ materials and sources of inspiration, including a beautifully textured pullover in one of Six and Seven Fiber’s fall-inspired tonal colors, two bulky scarf patterns that showcase Hue Loco’s yarn colors and give knitters a chance to play with texture (and fringe!), and a stunning shawl in four of Sunshine Yarn’s signature colors. Colorado’s plethora of craft breweries inspired us to create a beer bread recipe for baking in mason jars, and our swatch library tree turns knit and crocheted sample swatches into a one-of-a-kind art display. The team at Schacht Spindle Company have devised a shawl pattern that gives even novice weavers a chance to experiment with a pin loom and a gorgeous gradient of Sunshine Yarn hues, and we even include two sewing projects — the perfect project bag, constructed from waxed canvas, and a striking trapeze coat that marries jacket to poncho in iconic Pendleton wool. Patterns in Lookbook No. 8 feature talented designers Hilary Engebretson, and Shellie Anderson, sewist Lupine Marshak, and several patterns and projects from By Hand Serial founder and creative director Andrea Hungerford.

Lookbook n.9: Nova Scotia, The patterns and projects are all inspired by the landscapes, colors, textures, and fibers of Nova Scotia. By Hand Serial creative director Andrea Hungerford has designed knitting and sewing patterns that showcase this beautiful locale. And adorable stuffed whale is inspired by Nova Scotia’s maritime culture and the whales that swim off of its shores. The Cabot Dress is a simple, elegant and flattering sundress sewn from linen and cut on the bias that drapes beautifully and highlights the beautiful properties of linen. Knitting patterns include a rugged wool sailing sweater, a fingering weight cardigan perfect for wearing to the beach on chilly evenings, and three different versions of lustrous, diaphanous silk and mohair summer wraps round out the hands-on offerings in Issue #9.

Lookbook n.10: Montana, We travel Montana’s Big Sky Country, from Bozeman’s Paradise Valley to Flathead and Swan Lakes, from Glacier National Park to Swan Lake, and from Missoula’s Bitterroot Valley to the peaks of the Sapphire Mountains. The Montana makers we meet embody the power of a sense of place. Not only what they make, but how they make it is greatly influenced by their home. Montana has that kind of an impact: it is still so big, wild, beautiful, and largely empty of people, even in this day and age. The artists who have chosen to make their homes here love their place deeply and passionately, and that love is reflected in what they create. Join us in exploring Montana through the eyes of a scratch sourdough bread baker; a father and son team who has built wooden canoes by hand for almost fifty years; textile, yarn, fiber, and macrame artists; a sewist who creates rugged bags built for adventure from waxed canvas and Pendleton wools; and a jeweler who uses reclaimed metal and stones mined from the earth to create unique pieces of wearable art.
